High school sports, March 6: Talon Seitz named Class 3-A’s top senior wrestler
Hilton Head Island's Talon Seitz was named the state's Class 3-A Senior Wrestler of the Year on Saturday after finishing his high-school career with three more pins at the North/South All-Star Classic in North Myrtle Beach.
Seitz, competing for the Class 3-A/2-A South squad, ran his record to 57-0 with pins Friday night against Clover's Evan Johnson and Spartanburg's Shonquez Caldwell, followed by another pin of Chester's Cayman Williams in Saturday's finale.
Seahawks teammate Martin Duane also added to his unbeaten season with two more wins, taking an 8-4 victory Friday over Dorman's Dalton Simpson and dominating Indian Land's William Van Hoose 9-0 on Saturday. Those left Duane with a final 56-0 record.
Beaufort's Will Spann likewise won both of his weekend matches, with a 13-5 victory over Landon Anderson (Byrnes) and 4-3 triumph over Zane Mitchell (Eastside).
Beaufort's Connor Gruel and Battery Creek's Porter Mahon also wrestled in the event, but did not win a match.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Prep captures Warhawk Invitational: Tyler Fox capped an MVP performance with another home run and two RBIs as the Dolphins beat host Colleton Prep 7-5 in the championship game.
Fox went 2-for-4 on the afternoon, homering for the second time in as many days, and also picked up the win on the mound. Ricky Ledee also banged out two hits for the Dolphins, driving in two runs.
Porter-Gaud 7, Hilton Head Christian 2: John Burke had three of the Eagles' six hits as HHCA fell in the Warhawk Invitational's fifth-place game.
Connor Handy stroked an RBI double and John Blackshire had a sacrifice fly to drive home the Eagles' runs. HHCA trailed only 3-2 after five innings, before Porter-Gaud erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth.
