High school sports, March 4: Bluffton edges Hilton Head in golf opener
Bluffton used steadier production from the back half of its lineup to edge Hilton Head Island by a stroke in their season-opening match Thursday at Island West Golf Club.
Hilton Head’s Travis Mancill took medalist honors with an even-par 36 over nine holes, but each of the Bobcats’ top four shot 43 or better on the way to a team score of 164.
Drew Weary paced Bluffton with a 37, with brother Alec carding 41 and Chase Ingram and Joshua Simonson both with 43s. Skylar McDaniel posted a 41 for Hilton Head.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Christian 11, Northwood Academy 3: James Batholomew scored three runs and drove in another to lead the Eagles at the Warhawk Invitational in Walterboro.
The Eagles (1-1) overcame an early 2-0 deficit by scoring all 11 runs in the first three innings. Dargan Cherry and Andy Ballard also supplied early RBIs.
J.D. Monts went four innings on the mound, allowing two runs and two hits. John Burke followed with one-hit relief, striking out three.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Bluffton 13, Hilton Head 9: The Bobcats stormed back from an early deficit to move in front shortly before halftime, improving their record to 4-1 on the season.
Katy Bautista scored four goals to lead the Seahawks (0-2), while Nicole Reed and Ella Patrick added two goals apiece.
BOYS SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 4, St. Andrews 2: Thomas Roddey scored three goals for the Eagles (2-0), while John Dastous made five saves in goal.
Nathaniel Keenan tallied Beaufort Academy’s other goal, while the Eagles got assists from Ryan Muniz, Joe Bhoi and Jacob Dalton.
boys TENNIS
Beaufort Academy 6, Whale Branch 1: The Eagles’ five singles players combined to surrender only three games between them in evening their record at 1-1.
William Lindsey, James Carden, Daniel Richards, Mitchell Russell and Jeffrey Heistand claimed singles victories for BA, with Larry Lindsey and Jack Staley combining to win in doubles. Eryck Watton and Collin Roel teamed up for a Whale Branch doubles win.
