Prep roundup, Dec. 30: Beaufort girls return to winning ways

Imari Smalls scored 18 points as the Beaufort High girls basketball team bounced back from their first loss of the season, pulling away down the stretch for a 54-44 victory over St. Stephen Timberland in Tuesday's second round of the Carolina Invitational tournament in Charleston.

Monique Jones added 11 points for the Eagles (10-1), who led 37-36 after three quarters before erupting for 17 points in the final stanza. Breanna Heyward-White chipped in another seven points for Beaufort, while Terayah Williams scored six.

Beaufort, which lost its tournament opener to Carolina Forest, was set to play for fifth-place honors Wednesday against Clover.

Clover 43, Battery Creek 30: Taquasia Lampkin's 10 points made her the only player in double figures for the Dolphins, who lost their second Carolina Invitational game in as many outings.

Brianna Tolbert and Cierra Cohen added six points each for Battery Creek, which was set to wrap up its tournament schedule Wednesday against Timberland.

Hilton Head Prep 26, Cathedral Academy 16: Catherine Sheehan and Kiersten Clark scored eight points apiece to lead the Lady Dolphins in a defensively oriented contest.

Maddie McDonald pulled down eight rebounds for Hilton Head Prep, which evened its record at 4-4 to end the calendar year.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head 57, Savannah Christian 51: Bryce Singleton scored 19 points and Tywuan Pope added 13 as the Seahawks won Tuesday's opener at the Doyle Kelley Classic at Savannah Christian.

The Seahawks (4-6) advanced to a Wednesday meeting against Savannah Country Day.
