Beaufort's time in the winner's bracket of the Seahawk Holiday Basketball Classic came to an end Tuesday afternoon with a 35-22 loss to Alabama's Hazel Green.

"We didn't execute really well," Eagles head coach Nate Livesay said.

Beaufort's Matt Garay had a big second quarter, scoring 10 points and blocking three shots.

But the Eagles trailed 23-13 at the half and never really threatened the Trojans.

Garay finished with a team-high 12 points.

"He's played well this year," Livesay said. "He had a really nice second quarter. But getting him the ball may be an issue.

"And he's got to be able to create some opportunities for himself, as well."

With a lead constantly larger than 10, Hazel Green was content to hold the ball against the Eagles' zone in the second half. Even when Beaufort went back to man-to-man defense, the Trojans were still in no hurry to shoot.

Livesay said the approach spelled trouble for the Eagles.

"We let them holding the ball affect us on offense and on defense," he said.

Still, Beaufort (4-4) will face the loser of Tuesday's game between Cumberland County (Ky.) and Columbus (Fla.) in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"We have to see how things go tomorrow," Livesay said. "You have to judge our performance on our effort. You can't always judge things on wins and losses. So we'll have to see how things go."

In other boys tournament action, Harlan County (Ky.) beat Pendleton County (Ky.) 66-51.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Charlotte Latin (N.C.) 32, Hilton Head Island 14: The Seahawks got out to a rough start, trailing 29-6 at the half.

But head coach Sean Rochester was impressed with his team's second-half effort, when the Seahawks held the Hawks scoreless in the third quarter and gave up one field goal in the fourth.

"It would have been an easy time for this team to quit," Rochester said. "But to their credit, they said, 'We want to keep playing.'"

When the game ended, the Seahawks had three eighth-graders, a freshman and a junior on the floor.

"We're just trying to find the little things," Rochester said. "We're just trying to get better."

Hilton Head scorers included Dylan Brown with four; Sarah Slawson with three; Miley Ray, Chynna Sneed and Juliette MacMurray with two; and Trinity Feltner with one.

The Seahawks will face Mauldin at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

In other girls tournament action, Stephenson (Ga.) beat Niceville (Fla.) 55-48 in overtime, Harlan County (Ky.) beat Pendleton County (Ky.) 59-24, and Nansemond-Suffolk (Va.) beat Mauldin 45-38.

Stephenson and Harlan County will meet in the championship at 3 p.m.
