Hilton Head boys can't flip the switch against Cumberland County
Hilton Head Island head boys basketball coach Ken Updike didn't hold back his feelings about his team's 66-62 loss to Cumberland County (Tenn.) in Monday night's opening round of the Seahawk Holiday Classic at Hilton Head Island High School.
"I think we got outworked," Updike said.
Updike said his team simply didn't come out at the start of the game and do what they needed to do.
"It's really hard to simply turn the switch on and off when you want to," he said.
The Jets played well as a unit, and Hilton Head never got over the hump.
Silas Clark led Cumberland County with a game-high 34 points. Clark shot 12 free throws in the fourth quarter alone.
Troy Clifford led Hilton Head (2-5) with 17 points. Tywann Pope had 16, and Bryce Singleton scored 15.
Updike said the tournament format is tough -- the Seahawks don't get to work out their issues in practice before the next game -- but at the same time, it helps him find out what his team is made of.
"You get to see three different teams in three days," Updike said, "and every one of them does something differently.
"We get to find out how we react to different things thrown at us. Can we make adjustments?"
The Seahawks were set Tuesday to face North Forsyth (Ga.) at 8 p.m. in a consolation bracket game.
