Friday update: Most area high school football games postponed; Hilton Head Prep to play

The heavy rains passing through the Lowcountry ahead of Category 4 Hurricane Joaquin are wreaking havoc on area high schools' athletics schedules.

Nine high school football games scheduled for Friday — Battery Creek at Garrett, Beaufort Academy at Charleston Collegiate, Beaufort at Berkeley, Hanahan at Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Christian at Hilton Head Christian, Ridge Christian at John Paul II, Silver Bluff at Ridgeland-Hardeeville, Wando at Bluffton and Whale Branch at Bishop England — have been postponed until Monday.

Hilton Head Prep head football coach Kevin Wald has confirmed the Dolphins' 4:30 p.m. home game against Colleton Prep will go on as scheduled.

If Prep plays, it may be the only game involving teams from Beaufort or Jasper counties played today.

Thomas Heyward Academy's game at Orangeburg Prep was moved up to Thursday. The Rebels won, 38-19.

Beaufort's home JV football game Thursday with Berkeley was canceled, as was Bluffton's road JV game at Wando.

Also, the Beaufort High booster club's Golf Tournament and Oyster Bash was postponed. A make-up date will be decided next week.

More updates to come.
