Beaufort runs rivalry streak to 12 with 27-14 win over Battery Creek
When Tyrone Dilbert plunged in for the two-point conversion after his 7-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter Thursday night at Beaufort High School, Battery Creek took a 14-10 lead.
And for the next 12 minutes or so of game time, maybe a half hour of real time, the Dolphins' hopes of ending their drought in the rivalry were high.
And then they weren't.
Omar Cummings' 13-yard touchdown run with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter gave Beaufort the lead for good, and the Eagles went on to win 27-13 and push their win streak in the series to 12.
Wyatt Sherpensky added a 46-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, late in the fourth to ice the cake.
Sherpensky was the Eagles' star on offense. He rushed 22 times for 234 yards and the two scores.
Cummings added 127 yards and the go-ahead touchdown on 10 carries.
Battery Creek's running game was effective against the Eagles.
Dilbert led the way with 165 yards rushing on 28 carries. He scored both of the Dolphins' touchdowns, a 4-yarder in the first quarter and a 7-yarder in the third. He added a two-point conversion.
With the ball on their own 16 in the third quarter, the Dolphins went for it on fourth-and-13, but came up less than a yard short.
After a 16-yard-run by Sherpensky on first down, Cummings worked his way in from 13 yards out for the go-ahead score.
Penalties hurt the Dolphins, with some of their nine infractions coming in key situations.
Will Durbin hit field goals of 38 and 26 yards for the Eagles.
Late in the fourth quarter, Battery Creek's Tyrone Washington was taken from the field by stretcher. His lower left leg was immobilized. There was no word on the severity of his injury.
