State Champs! Hilton Head Island captures SC Class 4A crown
For the first time since 2017, the Hilton Head Island girls track team won a state championship.
The Seahawks captured the Class 4A championship on Thursday night at Richland Northeast High School. Hilton Head Island finished with 65.5 points with Westside coming in second with 58 points.
It was the fifth championship in program history with others coming in 2017 and 1990-92.
Julian McKenna won the 1,600, was second in the 800 and fifth in the 3,200 for HHI. Kyndal Cohen was first in the 400, and the Seahawks’ relay teams won the 4x400 and 4x800.
On the boys’ side May River came up just short in winning the state title. The Sharks finished with 61 points, a ½-point behind champion South Pointe.
May River’s Jackson Wright won the 800 and 1,600. Talan Farrington was second in the 3,200. The 4x400 relay team was second and the 4x800 relay team was third.
Hilton Head Island finished seventh with 37 points. Kaden Stewart won the 400 and the Seahawks won the 4x400 relay race. Joshua Gordilla was third in the 800 and Zac Henderson third in the 1,600.
Bluffton’s Amare Patterson was second in the 100 and 200 and Brennan Roedig third in the pole vault.
The championships will continue through Saturday at RNE and Spring Valley High Schools. Complete results from the meets can be found at SCMilesplit
