May River High is looking for its next football coach. Here is the latest

May River High School is looking for its next football coach.

Richard Bonneville has resigned his position after three seasons. Bonneville was the second coach of the school, located in Bluffton, that opened in 2016.

Bonneville is eligible for retirement after 28 years in the education system. He said he still hopes to continue coaching in the future but has to do it in a district that hires retirees.

“I told the team on Monday. Very sad and emotional,” Bonneville said. “However, I think it is the right thing for my family. … We had a nice little run.”

Bonneville came to May River with Rodney Summers from Westwood High in Northeast Columbia when Summers was named the first coach in school history.

Bonneville was the Sharks’ offensive line coach and offensive coordinator before he was promoted to head coach after Summers stepped down in 2023.

Bonneville had two winning seasons with the Sharks in his three seasons, going 19-14 in that span. May River made it to the second round of the playoffs in 2024 and was 7-4 this season.

The school has already posted the opening for Bonneville’s old job.
