HS Football Roundup: Bluffton, JPII, Beaufort Academy score big wins

The second week of high school football action is in the books. Here is a look at how area public and private school teams fared on Friday night:

Bluffton 49, Andrew Jackson 21

Quarterback Aedan McCarthy threw for more than 300 yards and rushed for more than 100 in Bluffton’s second win of the season.

McCarthy was 25-of-31 passing for 315 yards, three scores and also carried it 12 times for 106 yards and two scores.

Aaiden Howell rushed for 116 yards, two touchdowns and also caught three passes for 68 yards. Roman Benjamin caught six passes for 103 yards and two scores. Carnell Warren had a team-high 7 catches for 77 yards and a TD.

Greenwood 48, Beaufort 8

South Carolina commit Triston Lewis threw for 125 yards, two touchdowns and also ran for a TD as Greenwood knocked off Beaufort.

Tay Hamilton, Damrion Roman and Trey Crawford also had TDs for Greenwood.

Braydon Moyd-Smalls had a TD pass to Keandre Jennings for Beaufort’s lone touchdown. Moyd-Smalls came in at QB in place of Anthony Kahler, who left the game with an injury.

James Island 31, Hilton Head Island 8

Connor Dantzler threw touchdowns to Sam Crumpton and Jordan Kendrick in James Island’s win.

JI’s Thomas Lorentz kicked a 50-yard field goal.

Jayseyvion Brown had an interception return for a score for JI.

Derrick Raniszewski had a TD run for HHI.

West Ashley 31, May River 30 (OT)

The Sharks lost a tough one on the road to WA.

Sean Mitchell and Andrew Johnson had touchdowns for May River. Mitchell finished with 142 yards rushing and Johnson had 122.

Michael Poole had nine tackles and a caused fumble to lead the May River defense.

John Paul II 19, Battery Creek 14

The Warriors came back from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Dolphins.

It was John Paul II’s first win over a public school team in school history.

Jadon Inabinett scored the go-ahead 74-yard touchdown with six minutes left and the Warriors converted on the two-point conversion to lead 19-14.

JP II got a fourth-down stop with 2:44 left to seal the win.

Andrew Boyden rushed for 90 yards and a TD run. Jackson Reilley hit a school-record, 44-yard FG for JP II.

Whale Branch 40, Hardeeville 20

Quarterback Jermon Bowers had four touchdowns as the Warriors rallied past the Hurricanes.

Whale Branch trailed 14-0 but took the lead on Bowers’ fourth TD run of the game with 11:21 left.

Bowers also had an interception in the game on defense. Jayvion Harris and Tony Broxton Jr. had TD runs for Whale Branch.

Camari Brown had three touchdowns to lead Hardeeville.

Bethesda 53, Hilton Head Christian 28

The Eagles dropped to 1-2 after a loss at Bethesda.

Jordan Turner threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns for Bethesda. Running back Jordan Cheever rushed for 234 yards, a touchdown and caught a 65-yard TD pass.

Beaufort Academy 57, St. John’s Christian 20

Nych Underwood rushed for 181 yards and five touchdowns as the Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season.

Quarterback Nic Shuford threw for a touchdown and ran for a score. Shuford was 6-of-7 passing for 104 yards and also carried it 10 times for 101 yards.

Devin Fripp caught two passes for 85 yards and a score. Keeler Dineen returned an interception for a BA touchdown.

Colleton Prep 30, Thomas Heyward 13

Cale Evans threw a TD and ran for one in Colleton’s win over Thomas Heyward.

Thomas Corbett had a TD catch and Tanner Wolf ran for a score. Everett Temple returned a fumble for a score.

Tony O’Banner had two TD runs for THA.
