Playoff recap: May River, Ridgeland win in OT. Thomas Heyward headed to title game

May River and Bluffton’s first-round playoff matchup didn’t disappoint Friday night.

Tanner Macy scored on a two-point conversion to help May River to a 46-45 win in double overtime of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Sharks advance to play North Augusta next week.

The game was a rematch of the regular-season matchup won by Bluffton, 24-21, on a Ethan Carmel field goal with four minutes left.

The Bobcats led 31-21 on Aedan McCarthy’s 33-yard TD pass to Nate Ulmer with 11 minutes left.

May River got within 31-24 on Hudson Tanner’s 39-yard field goal with 9:14 left.

The Sharks got the ball back on their 27-yard line and drove down the field in the final minutes of regulation. Tanner Macy tied it on a 10-yard run with 1:05 left.

May River had the first possession in overtime and Sean Mitchell’s TD run made it 38-31. The Bobcats answered as McCarthy scrambled and found Carnell Warren open in the left-corner of the end zone to make it 38-38.

McCarthy made it 45-38 on a pass to Ulmer in double overtime. But Macy scored on a 3-yard run to make it 45-44.

Then May River coach Richard Bonneville decided to go for two and Macy took the snap and ran it on the left side for the win.Macy finished with two TD runs and Gage Duncan also had two.

McCarthy threw three TDs and ran for two. Ulmer had three touchdown catches.

Hilton Head Island 19, Crestwood 17

Troy Timko rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks advanced in the Class 4A playoffs.

Hilton Head Island will travel to South Florence in the second round. The Seahawks have nine victories for the first time since 2015.

Receiver Jeremiah Walters had a TD pass to Tyler Wiedemann, and Beau Sexson kicked a 24-yard field goal.

Ridgeland 26, Scott’s Branch 20 (OT)

Kayon Milligan picked off a pass in overtime to seal Ridgeland’s win over Scott’s Branch in the first round of the Class A playoffs.

Ridgeland faces Cross in the second round of the playoffs.

Running back Wenson Smith threw two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score to Cordell McClain on the Jags’ first possession of overtime.

Taishaun Smith had a TD pass and Semaj Hicks caught two touchdown passes.

Thomas Heyward 49, Dorchester Academy 14

The Rebels dominated the second half to earn a spot in the SCISA Class A championship game.

THA will play Williamsburg Academy at noon next Saturday at Charleston Southern. The Rebels are looking for their first state title since 2021.

Tony O’Banner had three touchdown runs including two in the decisive third quarter. Colton Young had a TD run and also returned an interception for a touchdown. Elijah McLemore also had a TD run and Kiran Boggess threw a TD pass to Joshua Gibson.

Wilson Hall 21, Hilton Head Christian 9

Owen Meyers had two touchdowns as the Barons defeated the Eagles in the semifinals of the SCISA 3A playoffs.

Wilson Hall will play Pinewood Prep for the championship at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 at Charleston Southern.

Ben McLaurin also had a TD run for Wilson Hall.

Ethan Hames recovered Reid McCollum’s fumble in the end zone for HHCA’s lone touchdown. Ian Kelly also had a field goal for the Eagles to cut the lead to 21-9 with 9:47 left in the third quarter.

Williamsburg Academy 21, Beaufort Academy 0

Micah Balder threw a TD and ran for one as the Stallions ended the Eagles’ season in the SCISA Class A championship game.
