Football rewind: Bluffton edges Beaufort. May River stays unbeaten
A roundup of Friday night’s high school football action from the Hilton Head area and statewide scores
Bluffton 42, Beaufort 35
Aedan McCarthy threw five touchdown passes, three to Carnell Warren, as the Bobcats defeated the Eagles in the region opener for both teams.
The game was back-and-forth most of the night with the two teams trading touchdowns.
Beaufort led 28-21 with two minutes left in the third quarter on Xavier Tobias’ 9-yard run. Tobias finished with 102 yards rushing and two scores. Bluffton tied it seconds later on Lucas Gates’ 83-yard kickoff return.
The Bobcats took a 35-28 lead on McCarthy’s 40-yard pass to Nate Ulmer. Bluffton made it 42-28 as McCarthy hit Tyler Wolfe for a 28-yard score.
Beaufort cut it to 42-35 on Samari Bonds’ 1-yard run with four minutes left. Bonds finished the game with 242 yards passing and 119 rushing before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter with an injury.
The Eagles got the ball back with a chance to tie and moved it to the Bluffton 47 before a turnover on downs.
May River 42, Colleton County 6
Quarterback Tanner Macy threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two as May River (5-0, 1-0) won its region opener.
Andrew Johnson rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the Sharks’ victory.
Bishop England 21, Hilton Head Island 7
Quinn Mahoney threw a pair of touchdowns in the Bishops’ win over the Seahawks.
Troy Timko had a TD for Hilton Head Island.
Battery Creek 47, North Charleston 14
Derrick Smalls had three touchdowns, including a pair of punt returns for a score as the Dolphins defeated North Charleston.
First Baptist 41, John Paul II 22
DJ Duncan returned an interception for a touchdown and had a fumble return for a score in the Hurricanes’ win over the Warriors.
Marik Gibbs added two touchdown runs for First Baptist.
John Paul II returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns by Tommy Gehm and Bryant Jolley. Gehm’s TD, 85-yarder to start the second half, gave John Paul II a 16-13 lead.
Connor Brown also had a TD for the Warriors.

Ridgeland moved to 2-0 in the region with a win over DenmarkOlar
