May River girls golf dominates in winning another Class 4A state championship
The May River girls golf team dominated its way to another state championship on Tuesday.
The Sharks shot a 646 over the two days to win the Class 4A championship at Saluda Valley. It was May River’s third championship in the last four seasons. The Sharks won titles in 2020, 2021 and was second last year.
May River’s Claire Green became the first Shark golfer to win an individual championship after shooting rounds of 70 and 71. Green was the only golfer under par in the championship.
Robbin Zetrouer shot 167, Ava Cunningham 168, and Hailey Zhao had a 170 for the Sharks, who won the Class 4A Lower State championship last week.
May River shot a 321 in the opening round and 325 in the second round. Catawba Ridge shot a 678 to finish second, and South Aiken was third at 686.
Hilton Head Island was seventh with a 719 and Bluffton was 14th.
Joining Green on the all-state golf team (top-10 finishers) were Catawba Ridge’s Brooke Millhouse and Reagan Lynch, Pickens’ Natalie Turner Lucy Beckham’s Grayson Bonner, South Aiken’s Allie Thomas, North Myrtle Beach’s Caitlyn Ferry, Myrtle Beach’s Yana Jeram, A.C. Flora’s Merritt Barbrey, and Hilton Head Island’s Brooke Niclaus.
In Class 5A, Dorman won its second straight championship and Blythewood sophomore Caroline Hawkins repeated as individual champion.
The Cavs finished with a 649, four shots better than Chapin. Dorman came into the day tied with Chapin, which was playing on its home course.
Dorman used a strong front nine to take a 10-shot lead into the final nine holes and held on to the four-shot victory.
Hawkins finished with an 11-under-par 135 to win by 14 strokes. Hawkins’ 11-under tied the girls golf state record under par with Oceanside Collegiate’s Smith Knaffle, who won the Class 2A championship in 2020.
In Class 3A, Waccamaw won its second state championship in program history with a 26-shot victory at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina.
It was the Warriors first state title since 2005. Waccamaw shot a 661 and Daniel was second at 687. Camden was the top local finishing team, finishing fourth with 716. Beaufort was seventh at 762.
Daniel’s Peyton O’Brien was the individual champion, winning in a playoff over Aynor’s Ella Kate Barnett.
