Three Beaufort golfers earn all-state honors at Class 3A boys tournament

The Beaufort boys golf team came up just short in its quest for its first state championship.

Woodruff defeated the Eagles on the first playoff hole Tuesday in the Class 3A championship at Three Pines Country Club.

The two teams were tied at 609 after the two rounds.

Beaufort entered the second day of the tournament with a four-shot lead over Wren and six-shot lead over Woodruff. But Woodruff shot a 304 in the second round to win its second championship in three years.

Woodruff’s Gage Howard shot a 1-under 143 to win the individual championship. Beaufort had three golfers make all-state, which is made of the top-10 finishers in the tournament.

Jack Lubkin was tied for second with a 147. Jerry Bruns tied for fourth with a 148 and Simon McAlister was 10th at 153.

In the Class 4A tournament, Bluffton finished 13th with a 671. Jones Saylor tied for 20th to lead the Bobcats. North Augusta was a runaway winner in the event with a 15-under 553 to win by 22 shots.

Hilton Head’s Thomas Ford tied for 27th.
