Beaufort boys soccer wins thriller, advances to first state championship match

The Beaufort boys soccer team is headed to the state championship for the first time in school history.

The Eagles defeated Waccamaw 4-2 in penalty kicks to win the Class 3A Lower State championship on Monday night. The match was tied 2-2 after two overtimes and two sudden-death periods.

Beaufort will play defending champion Daniel for the state championship on Saturday at Irmo High School. The Lions are making their third straight championship appearance The match will start 25 minutes after the girls game, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Beaufort trailed 2-1 until late in the second half until Jack Troutman scored on a free kick.

After neither team scored in the overtime periods, it went to penalty kicks. Guerin Willis, Sam Trask, Troutman and Bryce DeFilippis scored in penalty kicks for the Eagles. DeFilippis’ kick sealed the win. He also had a goal in the first half to tie it at 1-1.

Nigel Bell played well in goal for Beaufort and had two big stops in penalty kicks.

The Eagles (15-2) enters the championship on a 13-match winning streak.

Girls Soccer

Hilton Head Prep 10, Northside Christian 0

Callah Dando had four goals and an assist and Ashley Brothers had a trick in the Dolphins’ win in the SCISA 3A playoffs.

HHP will play John Paul II on Wednesday in the semifinals.

Bryn Miller had two goals and an assist, Courtney Campbell a goal and an assist and Hailie Klinger had two assists.

John Paul II 6, Spartanburg Christian 0

The Warriors scored three goals in each half to win their SCISA 3A playoff match.

John Paul II will play Hilton Head Prep for the third time this season on Wednesday. HHP won the two regular-season matches.

Hilton Head Christian 4, Shannon Forest 1

The Eagles went on the road and defeated Shannon Forest in the first round of the SCISA 3A playoffs.

Hilton Head Christian will travel to Christian Academy on Wednesday in the semifinals.

High School Golf

Lowcountry teams qualify for state

Beaufort High won the Class 3A Lower State golf championship on Monday, while Bluffton qualified for 4A and two area golfers qualified as individuals.

Beaufort shot a team score of 313 to win by 18 shots over Philip Simmons. Beaufort’s Simon Mcalister shot a 1-over 73 to earn medalist honors. Three other Eagle golfers finished in the top 10 - Jack Lubkin (79), Jack Sumner (80) and Jerry Bruns (81).

Bluffton shot a 323 to finish fifth in the Class 4A Lower State championship in Florence. Jones Saylor shot a 75 to lead the Bobcats.

Hilton Head Island’s Thomas Ford (74) and May River’s Landry Williams (78) qualified as individuals.

The state tournaments will be next Monday-Tuesday at various locations.

High School Baseball

Beaufort 7, Gilbert 6

Mason Connelly had a two-run walk-off single to help the Eagles win the District 6 championship.

Beaufort hosts Hanahan in the first round of the Lower State playoffs on Thursday.

Connelly was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Zack Talbert led Beaufort with four hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Jadyn Andrews was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Malcolm Webb was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Carolina Academy 5, Hilton Head Prep 3

Carolina Academy scored three runs in the fifth and held off a late Dolphins’ comeback in the SCISA 3A playoffs.

Hilton Head Prep ends the season at 21-5. Payce Gartner had three hits to lead HHP.

Softball

Beaufort 6, Waccamaw 4

The Eagles advanced to the District 6 championship with a win over the Warriors.

Beaufort travels to Marlboro County on Wednesday and will need to beat the Bulldogs twice to win the district championship.

Kylie Rast had the go-ahead single for Beaufort in the bottom of the sixth as the Eagles scored twice in the inning to take a 6-4 lead.

Riley Brozek, Rast, and Caylin Adkins each had multiple hits for Beaufort.
