Another One! Hilton Head Christian girls win fifth straight state championship
Hilton Head Christian girls basketball’s reign on top of SCISA isn’t ending anytime soon.
The Eagles won their fifth straight championship by defeating Shannon Forest, 67-38, on Friday to win the SCISA Class 3A championship at Sumter Civic Center.
HHCA finished the season at 28-2 with its two losses to out-of-state opponents, Lawrence County (Ky.) and Woodville Tompkins (Ga,). All but two of their victories were by double digits.
The championship is the first for coach Bobby Thompson, who replaced coach Kenny Conroy after he moved to his hometown and now is the coach at Savannah Country Day.
“I’m so happy for these young ladies,” Thompson told reporters after the game. “These seniors get to go out with five in a row. They got one for every finger now. These ladies have formed a bond that will never be broken.”
Hilton Head Christian jumped out to a 20-3 lead and never let Shannon Forest get in a rhythm.
Ta’Mya Hutchinson led the Eagles with 27 points and Devon Yarde added 14. Hutchinson was one of three HHCA players to be named to the all-tournament team. Morgan Scott and Abby Peduzzi also made the all-tournament team.
Shannon Forest finishes the season at 21-4. The Crusaders were making their first state championship appearance.
All-tournament selection Katie Edney led Shannon Forest with 12 points.
