Hilton Head Island girls tennis headed to state championship match

The Hilton Head Island girls tennis team will play for a state championship.

The Seahawks defeated Region 7-4A foe Lucy Beckham, 4-1, on Tuesday to win the Class 4A Lower State championship. Hilton Head Island will play Greenville in the state championship match at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence.

Greenville defeated Riverside to win the Upper State championship.

It will be Hilton Head Island’s fourth state championship appearance in Class 4A and first since winning it all in 2019. The Seahawks have won the fourth-most state championships in girls tennis with 12, 11 coming at the Class 3A level.

Hilton Head Island won six straight Class 3A championships from 2007-12.

The Seahawks are 16-1 on the season, with the lone loss to SCISA champion Hilton Head Prep. HHI went 3-0 this year against Lucy Beckham with a 5-1 win on Sept. 20 and 5-2 on Oct. 17.

Match winners on Tuesday were Hailey Poplin (1-6, 6-1, 10-1), KS Kersey (6-3, 6-2), Kourtny Kosto (6-4 3-6, 10-4) and Alyssa Ruckno (6-1, 6-2).
