Beaufort eighth grader wins SC state singles tennis championship

Beaufort eighth grader Graeme Angus captured the Class 4A/5A boys singles tennis championship on Tuesday at Florence Tennis Center.

Angus, who goes to Beaufort Middle School, completed his second year on Beaufort’s varsity tennis team and helped the Eagles to the Class 4A Lower State championship this year before losing to state champion Myrtle Beach.

Last season, Beaufort made it all the way to the state championship before losing to AC Flora.

Angus was the Region 7-4A Player of the Year and won five matches over the two days to win the championship.

Angus defeated Dreher’s Achilles Hahab, 6-1, 6-1, Greenwood’s Hampton Goldman, 6-1, 6-0, River Bluff’s Rintaro Sato, 6-1, 7-6 ( 7-2), Spartanburg’s Jerome Falcom, 7-5 6-2 and defeated Greenwood’s Graeme Simpson, 6-4 6-1, in the championship match.

Angus finished the year with a 23-1 record.

High school soccer playoff roundup

Hilton Head Island girls soccer saw its playoff run ended while SCISA boys teams began their playoffs on Tuesday.

At James Island, the Islanders defeated Hilton Head Island, 5-3, in the Class 4A Lower State championship. James Island advances to the championship and will play Eastside on Friday night.

Hilton Head girls lose in semifinals

It was the third win for James Island over HHI, which were the fourth seed from Region 7-4A and made a great run to the state semifinals. Hilton Head Island finishes the season at 12-8.

James Island scored four goals in the first half on its way to the win.

In SCISA 2A boys, John Paul II defeated Greenwood Christian, 8-0 and advanced to Thursday’s semifinals. The Warriors will host Spartanburg Day with the winner going to Saturday’s championship.

Colin Anfinson, Brennan McDermott, Mark Knight, Jackson Ogden, Anthony Hill, Jackson Sanders, and Finn Mahoney all had goals for John Paul II.

Spartanburg Day defeated Hilton Head Christian, 3-2, in penalty kicks.

In other SCISA 2A matches, Northwood defeated Beaufort Academy, 3-1.
