Roundup: Beaufort’s rally falls short, HHP wins in OT. Area wrestlers qualify for state

Faced with a large first-half deficit, the Beaufort boys basketball team mounted a huge comeback before falling short to West Florence, 92-78, on Saturday in the Class 4A playoffs.

The Eagles trailed by as many as 20 points in the second quarter but rallied and tied it at 65 with 6:32 left. But West Florence finished the game on a 27-13 to advance and will play North Augusta in the Lower State semifinals.

West’s Deuce Hudson scored a game-high 27 points and Darren Lloyd added 18 points.

Beaufort finished the season at 15-6 and were Region 7-4A champions. The Eagles had four players in double figures, led by James Dennison’s 21 points. Jake Alvarez was next with 19 points while Zyrin Odom had 17 and Michael Dennison 14.

Hannah-Pamplico 49, Whale Branch 46

Cyrus Ellison and Jason Graham each had 14 points as the Raiders ended the Warriors’ season in the second round of the Class A playoffs.

AJ Singleton led Whale Branch with 18 points.

Hilton Head Prep 27, Laurence Manning 22 (OT)

The Dolphins overcome LMA’s deliberate slow-paced attack to win in the first round of the SCISA Class 3A playoffs

Hilton Head Prep will face Cardinal Newman at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sumter Civic Center.

JP Hayes led Prep with 15 points, including a big basket with 39 seconds left to tie it at 18.. The Dolphins led 5-4 at halftime as LMA tried to slow things down by holding onto the ball for much of the game.

Beaufort Academy 64, Northside Christian 44

The Eagles advanced in the SCISA 2A playoffs with a victory in the game held at Orangeburg Prep.

Beaufort Academy outscored the Crusaders, 23-7, to pull away. Sully Gay led the way with 23 points. Braydon Dineen had 13 points, and Amarion Wilson added 10.

Beaufort Academy takes on Spartanburg Day at Cardinal Newman High on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Pee Dee Academy 55, John Paul II 33

Hudson Spivey scored 32 points as the Eagles eliminated the Warriors in the SCISA Class A playoffs.

Mark Knight led John Paul II with 10 points.

Calhoun Academy 63, Thomas Heyward 55

The Rebels’ season ended in the first round of the SCISA Class A playoffs on Saturday.

Lowcountry athletes qualify for state

Lowcountry wrestlers from Hilton Head Island, May River, Bluffton, Beaufort and Battery Creek high schools competed in the state qualifiers over the weekend.

Here is a list of area wrestlers who qualified for the 2022 SC High School League individual championships to be held Friday and Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center.
