Playoff roundup: Hilton Head girls win on the road, Bluffton upset at home

The SC high school basketball playoffs kicked off on Wednesday with several Lowcountry teams in action.

Hilton Head Island pulled off one of the surprises of the night with a road win at Midland Valley, 58-54, while Region 7-4A champion and fourth-ranked Bluffton lost at home to Darlington, 38-33.

Class 4A Girls

▪ Hilton Head Island 58, Midland Valley 54: The Seahawks overcame a 38-31 halftime deficit for the first-round victory. Hilton Head will travel to Region 6-4A champion South Florence in the second round on Friday. Lynda Young led the way with19 points while Gianna Timko had 15 and Janiya Ferebee 13.

▪ Darlington 38, Bluffton 33: Carolinas Classic All-Star selection Sommer Joseph scored nine points as the Falcons knocked off the fourth-ranked Bobcats, who ended the season at 20-2. Bluffton’s only other loss came against Class 5A Northwestern on Dec. 28.

▪ South Florence 63, May River 33: Albany Wilson scored 18 points and Jazmyne Lyde 16 as the Bruins defeated the Sharks in the first-round of the playoffs. Morgan Scott led May River with 14 points. May River finishes the season at 8-15.

Class 2A Girls Playoffs

▪ Ridgeland-Hardeeville 47, Kingstree 37: Sa’nay Patterson scored 20 points and Janiyah Chaneyfield scored 15 in R-H’s first-round victory at home. The Jaguars travel to Andrew Jackson in the second round on Friday. AJ defeated Burke, 81-46.

Class A Girls Playoffs

▪ Whale Branch 64, Carvers Bay 36: Kynew Barnwell had a game-high 30 points to send the Warriors into the second round. Whale Branch travels to Estill, which defeated Timmonsville, 61-27, on Friday. Kiana Smashum had 12 points and Layla Love scored 10.
