Roundup: May River boys soccer wins matchup of defending state champs
Connor Golden scored twice and had two assists as May River defeated Oceanside Collegiate in a matchup of state champions from last season.
May River won the Class 3A title last year while Oceanside claimed the 2A crown.
Ezekiel Chappelear, Chris Pineda and Chris Hernandez each scored a goal for May River.
Sebastian Orlando stopped three shots to earn the win in goal.

Miles Spratling had two goals and Ben Trask had a goal and assist for the Eagles.
Kevin Rogers recorded the shutout in goal.
Battery Creek 7, John Paul II 0
Alex Cruz had three goals and Kenny Diaz had two in the Dolphins’ victory.
Sonny Quintainlla had a goal and four assists and Talmedge Magbee had three assists. Dallin Morgan had seven saves.

Bluffton 7, Berkeley 0
Adeline Rios had four goals and an assist in Bluffton’s victory.
Jillian Lauver added two goals for the Bobcats.
Pinewood Prep 3, Beaufort 1
Quinn Wilson had 23 saves and Trinity Jones had Beaufort’s lone goal in the loss.
Holy Trinity 5, Beaufort Academy 1
Abby Carte led the way with two goals, while Ella Cooler, Hannah Reedy, and Lydia Mahan eached scored a goal for Holy Trinity.

Margaret Hiers had BA’s lone goal.

Bless Hurtado scored HHCA’s lone goal in the tie with Effingham.

Darrin Horn pitched a four-inning perfect game and struck out 11 in the opener as the Sharks swept the doubleheader.
John Pesaturo had three hits and two RBI. Bennett Roemer and Wilson Mullis added two RBI.
In game two, Horn had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs in the Sharks’ victory.
Riley Stokes recorded all nine outs by strikeouts to pick up the win.
Beaufort 3, May River 1
Oliver Holmes tossed a complete game and Paul Winland homered in Beaufort’s win Thursday night.
Beaufort 11, Battery Creek 0
Wes Graves and Michael Holdridge combined on a one-hitter in Beaufort’s win Wednesday.
Paul Winland had two hits and three RBI, and Rhogue Wallace had two RBI for the Eagles.
Thomas Heyward 17, Hilton Head Christian 0
The Rebels scored 11 runs in the first inning in the run-ruled win Thursday.
Fulton Wade, Peyton Bennett, Louie Smith and Carter Zareva each had two RBI for Thomas Heyward.
Softball
May River competes at Byrnes Invitational
May River won two of its first three games at the Byrnes Invitational this weekend.
The Sharks defeated Greer, 14-7, and lost to Chapin 5-4 on Friday. On Saturday morning, the Sharks defeated Liberty, 18-0. The result of the tournament wasn’t done as press time.
Against Greer, Giovana Rodriguez hit a three-run homer and Olivia Turpin was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Against Liberty, the Sharks had 21 hits in the game. Turpin was 3-for-4 with a homer and six RBI. Casey Laing was 4-for-4 with three RBI, and Rodriguez had two RBI.
Hilton Head Island 27, Battery Creek 18
Reagan Marchant homered twice and drove in five runs as the Seahawks won the high-scoring affair.
Leading 20-18, HHI scored seven runs in the sixth to put the game away. Delcie Swift homered and had two RBI. Margaret Todd was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Alexandra Fisher was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Bluffton 6, Goose Creek 5
Bluffton scored three runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a win over the Gators.
The score was tied at 3 going into the seventh. Marissa Majorkiewicz had a two-run hit to score Regan Kelly and Alyssa Rose to make it 5-3. Illa Hodges’ fielder’s choice made it 6-3.
Goose Creek scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but the Bobcats held on for the win.
Parker Ray pitched a complete game for the win.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt 18, Beaufort 4
Madison Sanchez had two RBI in the loss for the Eagles.
Bamberg scored all of its runs from the third inning on in the game.
John Paul II 12, Beaufort Academy 11
Mike’ala Washington homered and had five RBI in the loss for Beaufort Academy. Chase Vaigneur and Jordan Gray each had three hits.

Waccamaw 9, May River 8 (2 OT)
Ethan Sotiropoulos had three goals and Rob Gadomski scored twice for May River in the loss.
Mike Gonzales added a goal and two assists and Brooks van Esselstyn had a goal and two assists.
