Lowcountry wrestlers qualify for state championships, area hoops teams advance in playoffs
It was a good weekend for Lowcountry wrestlers as several qualified for the individual state championships.
The individual state championships will be Saturday and Sunday at Anderson Civic Center.
In Class 3A, May River had a record 12 wrestlers qualify for the championships.
May River had three indicidual state champions - EJ Seman (106), Isham Peace (113) and Eli Hall (220). Chad Hadden (120), Miguel Cavalheiro (138), and Anthon Funderburk (170) were runner-up. Mike Sunkins (138), Anthony Nelsen (145), Gabriel Juarez (152), and Rod Grant (195) came in third and Wyatt Banfield (160) and Donovan Ling (182) finished fourth.
Battery Creek had four wrestlers qualify for the championships. Larson McManigle (145) won an individual title. Sam DeGroat (106) was second, Johan Linares (126) third and George Reilly Smith (120) was fourth.
Seven Beaufort High wrestlers qualified for 4A championships. The Eagles had individual champions Gary Bayne (106), Mathew Durrance (138), James Dagin (152) and Michael Cenci (170).Cenci recorded his 100th victory over the weekend. Jeremiah Simmons (160) finished second while Colton Phares (145) placed third and Payton Bayne (120) finished in fourth. The highlight of the day for the team came as Payton Bayne battled back from an earlier defeat in the consolation rounds and qualified to go to the state meet. He and his brother Gary had dedicated their performance this weekend to their mom, who passed away earlier this season,
Four Hilton Head Island wrestlers qualified. James Levy (113) won an individual crown. Jesus Catalan (106) was second, Santiago Rueda (132) third, and Drew Vigh (126) came in fourth. Bluffton’s Xavier Dykstra (220) finished second to qualify for the Bobcats.In Class 2A.Two Whale Branch wrestlers qualified for 2A championships. Xavier Chaplin won the 285-pound title while Zakariya Williams (195) was second.
Boys Basketball
Whale Branch 54, Burke 38
The Warriors moved on in the 2A Lower State semifinals with a win Saturday.
Shawn Chisolm led Whale Branch with 17 points. Nick Pringle had 12, and Javon Hogue finished with 10. The Warriors host Oceanside Collegiate on Tuesday in the lower state semifinals at 7 p.m.
Girls Basketball
John Paul II 48, The King’s Academy 21
TKai Devore almost had a triple double with 11 points, eight assists, and 12 rebounds in the Warriors win in the first round of SCISA 2A playoffs.
JP II faces Palmetto Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Wilson Hall.
Hilton Head Prep 39, Marlboro Academy 24
Fourth-seeded HHP knocked off Marlboro in the first round of the SCISA 2A playoffs.
The Dolphins will face Oakbrook Prep on Tuesday at Heathwood Hall beginning at 8 p.m. Ella Clark led the way with 14 points.
Beaufort Academy 65, Anderson Christian 9
The Eagles had no trouble in their first round game in the SCISA Class A playoffs.
Mike’Ala Washington led Beaufort Academy with 22 points and EmilyAnn Hiers added 11. The Eagles play Richard Winn at Heathwood Hall on Tuesday with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
Hilton Head Christian 75, Dillon Christian 21
The defending champion Eagles rolled in their first-round game in SCISA 2A playoffs.
Dior Shelton had a team-high 12 points for HHCA. Skylar Smith, Lynda Young, and Abby Peduzzi each had 10 for the Eagles, who play Spartanburg Day at 6 p.m., on Tuesday at Heathwood Hall.
