Lowcountry basketball teams set to begin SC High School League playoffs
Lowcountry high school basketball teams got their playoff matchups as pairings for SC High School League playoffs were released Saturday.
The 3A girls playoffs begin Monday with region champion May River hosting Pelion and Battery Creek heading to Strom Thurmond. On Tuesday, region champion Bluffton hosts Darlington and Beaufort travels to Airport in the 4A playoffs. Whale Branch hosts Mullins on Tuesday in 2A playoffs.
On the boys’ side, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Ridgeland-Hardeeville, May River and Whale Branch made the playoffs.
Ridgeland-Hardeeville hosts Swansea at 7 p.m. on Tuesday while May River travels to Strom Thurmond at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, HHI hosts North Myrtle Beach at 6:30 p.m. while Bluffton heads to Aiken in the 4A playoffs. Whale Branch hosts Mullins.
Pairings for the SCISA playoffs will be released this week.
Boys
Whale Branch’s Pringle picked for Carolinas Classic
Whale Branch senior and Wofford signee Nick Pringle was picked to play in the Carolinas Classic All-Star game.
The game features some of the top seniors in North and South Carolina. It will be held March 28 in Wilmington, NC. Pringle is averaging 15.2 points and 10.9 rebounds this season for the Warriors, who begin the playoffs Wednesday against Mullins.
Saturday
Beaufort Academy 75, Andrew Jackson 71 (2 OT)
Dawson Coleman scored 26 points and Elijah Fess had 14 to lead Beaufort Academy to a 75-71 win over Andrew Jackson on Saturday
Friday
Hilton Head Prep 71, Pinewood Prep 70
Tyrone Calloway scored 25 points and hit the game-winning shot as time expired Friday to give the Dolphins the win over Pinewood.
Kane Eanes scored 18, and Ryan Mikell had 12 for HHP, which plays Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday.
John Paul 37, Beaufort Academy 33
Mark Knight scored 12 points and Jeremiah Young 11 in the Warriors’ victory.
Knight also had eight steals. Elijah Fess led Beaufort Academy with 18.
Girls
Beaufort Academy 67, John Paul II 63 (OT)
Beaufort Academy withstood a big game from Tkai Devore to win in overtime Friday.
Amelia Huebel scored 19 points and Mike’Ala Washington had 17 to lead the Eagles, who had four players in double figures. Emily Ann Hiers added 12 points, and Tahleea Heyward 10 for the Eagles.
DeVore led the Warriors with 38 points and 21 rebounds. Abby Quinty added 17
Wrestling
JP II’s Torinese wins state title
Peter Torinese captured a state championship Saturday in the SCISA individual championships at Cardinal Newman
Torinese won the championship in the 113-pound division. Will Durham placed third while Kohl Woodham and Noah Brock were fourth.
