Beaufort, May River wrestling moving on in postseason

Beaufort and May River wrestling teams are moving on in the postseason.

Beaufort defeated Airport, 58-24, in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs on Saturday. The Eagles, who had a bye in the first round, travel to North Myrtle Beach on Monday.

Beaufort winners by win were Payton Bayne (113), Mathew Durrance (138), Kaywan Johnson (152), James Dagin (160), Michael Cenci (170), Jeremiah Simmons (182), John Legree (195) and Degin Lowery (220). Other winners were Colton Phares (145) by a score of 11-3 and Gary Bayne (106) by forfeit.

In Class 3A, May River headed to the lower state semifinals with 78-6 win over Edisto and 76-6 win over Loris. The Sharks head to Gilbert on Monday with the winner going to the lower state championship.

Winners for May River included CJ Ciccarelli, Anthony Nelsen, Rod Grant, Eli Hall, EJ Seman, Noah Creque, Chad Hadden, Michael Sunkins, Gabriel Juarez, Wyatt Banfield, Anthon Funderburk, Donovan Ling, Rett Harrell and Travis Tran.Hilton Head Island won its first match in the 4A playoffs with a 45-32 win over Brookland-Cayce but lost to North Myrtle Beach, 64-15, in the second round.

Basketball

Hilton Head Christian teams pick up wins

The Hilton Head Christian basketball teams each won twice this weekend.

The HHCA boys defeated Colleton Prep, 69-57, on Friday and beat Coastal Home School, 49-36 on Saturday. Daniel Harrington had 18 points and Floyd Hargrove scored 13 in Saturday’s win.

The HHCA girls won, 69-26 over Colleton on Friday and 43-24 over Coastal on Saturday. Jasmine Campbell had 18 points in Saturday’s win.

Hilton Head Prep 48, John Paul II 45 (Friday)

Tyrone Calloway scored 16 and Stone McDonald added 11 in the Dolphins’ win Friday night.

Reco Anderson led John Paul II with 27 points and seven rebounds.

Those three were joined by offensive linemen Alfred Young (Limestone) and Conrad Alford (Pikeville), linebacker Elijah Thompson (Limestone), and linebacker/running back Eli Hickey (Morehead State).

“Elijah, Conrad, and Alfred are guys who have really only played for two years and there is huge upside for them,” Payne said. “Eli is an aggressive player and throws his body all over the place. This is a very special and close-knit group of seniors. They put in the work and were rewarded for it.”

Joining the football players in signing were golfer Jack Lashinger (Erskine), track runner Max Baez (Queens), and baseball player JR Richardson (Erskine).
