Roundup: John Paul II, Hilton Head Prep hoops earn sweep Tuesday night

Tyrone Calloway had a game-high 14 points and sophomore Ryan Mikell scored 11 points off the bench as Hilton Head Prep defeated Beaufort Academy, 47-31, on Tuesday in boys high school basketball.

HHP, which led 24-19 at halftime, used a 11-5 run in the third quarter to pull away. The Dolphins improved to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in region play.

Brandon Trapp scored 11 points to lead Beaufort Academy.

Lake Marion 53, May River 52

Tyrine Mazyck scored 11 points, and Detrick Jenkins had 10 points as the Gators defeated the Sharks for their second win of the year.

Hilton Head Christian 69, Bulloch 41

Floyd Hargrove scored a game-high 27 points in the Eagles’ non-region win.

Jace Blackshear added 13 for HHCA.

John Paul II 63, Colleton Prep 48

Reco Anderson scored 17 points in the Warriors’ road win.

Jackson Ogden and Mark Knight each added 11 points.

Effingham 72, Beaufort 51 (Monday)

Beaufort cut a 15-point deficit to six points in the third quarter but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Oliver Holmes led the Eagles with 19 points. Zyrin Odom added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Girls Basketball

Beaufort Academy 34, Hilton Head Prep 29 (OT)

Amelia Huebel had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagles’ overtime win.

Mike’Ala Washington added 10 points and Chase Vaigneur pulled down 10 boards.

May River 55, Lake Marion 37

Olivia Peluso led three May River players in double figures with 15 points.

Jordan Bigham added 12 points, and Gracyn Drury had 10. May River is 11-5 overall and 5-0 in region play.

John Paul II 51, Colleton Prep 30

Tkai Devore notched another double-double as the Warriors matched last season’s win total with their 17th win.

Devore scored 18 points and had 19 rebounds. Jasmine Hamilton added 11 points and Katie Leigh Floyd had 10.

Hilton Head Christian 63, Bulloch 20

Four HHCA players scored in double figures in HHCA blowout win.

Dior Shelton led the way with 18 points followed by Brielle McCarthy (11), Jasmine Campbell (10) and Mary Yanker (10).

Hilton Head Island 52, New Hampstead (Ga.) 32 (Monday)

Janiya Ferebee poured in a career-high 16 points for the Seahawks.

Miley Ray added 12 points and Chyna Fields 10 in HHI’’s win.

Beaufort 38, Effingham (Ga.) 35 (Monday)

Sequoia Smalls scored 17 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer late in the double-overtime win.

Layla Warren added 12 points for the Eagles.

Three Lowcountry teams in latest SC coaches polls

Whale Branch, Ridgeland0-Hardeeville and Bluffton are in ranked in latest SC Basketball Coaches polls relased Monday.

Whale Branch boys are No. 4 in Class 2A while Ridgeland-Hardeeville is No. 8 in Class 3A boys poll. Bluffton girls moved up two spots to No. 8 in Class 4A poll.

Lowco Showcase slated for March

The top high school basketball players from Beaufort and Jasper counties will get their chance to shine at the inaugural Lowco Basketball Showcase on March 27-28 at Beaufort Academy.

LowcoSports has partnered with Beaufort Academy and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry to organize the event, which will feature 96 of the best hoops stars in the area.

The Lowco Basketball Showcase will include two Rising Stars games for the top 24 boys and girls players in 10th grade and below,a slam dunk and 3-point shooting competitions and two All-Star games for the top 24 junior and senior boys and girls in the area.

The Rising Stars games and skill competitions will be held on March 27, with the All-Star games on March 28. The events are tentatively scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. each day.

Tickets for the Lowco Basketball Showcase are $15 per day or $25 for both days and are on sale at LowcoSports.com/Lowco-Basketball-Showcase.

A significant portion of the proceeds from ticket sales, merchandise sales, a silent auction, and raffles will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, particularly the club’s programs in Northern Beaufort County and Jasper County.
