High school roundup: Beaufort, May River wrestling win region titles

Beaufort and May River wrestling teams picked up region titles Wednesday night.

Beaufort, ranked No. 10 in 4A by SCMat, defeated Colleton County, 72-9, for its second straight region title.

Gaining victories by pin for Beaufort were Tayriq Legree (113), Ryley King (132), Mathew Durrance (138), Colton Phares (145), Michael Cenci (170) and Terrence Wilson (285).

May River, ranked No. 3 in 3A, defeated Battery, 63-8, for its second straight Region 8-3A crown. Winners for May River were EJ Seman, Travis Tran, Isham Peace, CJ Ciccarelli, Pat Treacy, Wyatt Banfield, Donovan Ling, Anthon Funderburk, Rod Grant, Eli Hall, Kailin Prescott-Ferguson and Michael Sunkins.

Both teams begin the state wrestling playoffs Feb. 8.

Boys Basketball

Hilton Head Island 43, Wade Hampton 40

The Seahawks (10-6) won their sixth straight game and knocked off the No. 3 team in 3A on Wednesday.

Alex Smith and Sam Summa led HHI with 11 points each. Dean Seelbach added 10. Hilton Head Island hosts Colleton County on Friday.

Beaufort Academy 56, Holly Hill 51

Elijah Fess and Braxton Tolbert each had 16 points to help Beaufort Academy to a non-region win.

Dawson Coleman added 11 for the Eagles (9-5, 3-2)

Girls Basketball

Wade Hampton 34, Hilton head Island 33

The Seahawks rally came up just short against Wade Hampton.

WH hit a 3-point shot with five seconds left to hand HHI its third straight loss.

Miley Ray led the Seahawks (9-9) with 16 points.

Beaufort Academy 67, Holly Hill 21

Tahleea Heyward led Beaufort Academy with 15 points as the Eagles (12-2, 3-2) picked up their 12th win of the year.

Mike’ala Washington added 14 and Amelia Huebel scored 12.

John Paul II 52, Habersham 32

Tkai DeVore just missed out on another double-double in the victory for the Warriors.

DeVore had 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jasmine Hamilton and Taylor Michael each added 11 points. Hamilton had six rebounds and Michael hit 3 3-pointers.

Bella Temini had eight rebounds and five assists.
