Roundup: Lowcountry players shine in Blitz Bowl. Bluffton boys edge May River in hoops action
Jenkins High’s Taurus Simmons earned MVP honors with three sacks as Team Coastal Empire defeated Team Lowcountry, 38-17, on Saturday to win the third annual Blitz Border Bowl.
Beach quarterback Jaylen Wells threw for three scores in the win for Coastal Empire. Two of Wells’ TD passes came in the third quarter as the two teams combined for 35 points in the frame.
Bluffton receiver Rakim White had a strong performance and hauled in eight catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns, both in the third. One of White’s TDs came from his Bluffton teammate Lee Kirkland, who threw for 127 yards in the game.
Hilton Head Christian’s Hayden Shinn threw for 140 yards and a TD. Bluffton’s Evan Hayes had a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter to begin the scoring.
Boys Basketball
Bluffton 52, May River 50
Tyler Rice had 22 points as Bluffton held off a late comeback to win Saturday night.
With the win, the Bobcats sweep the season series with both games being decided by two points. Bluffton won, 54-52, on Dec. 6.
Bluffton led 40-32 going into the fourth quarter but the Sharks got as close as 51-50 late in the game with a chance to take the lead but couldn’t convert.
Harry Cash led May River with 15 points.
John Paul II 56, First Presbyterian 26
CJ Knight had 14 points as the Warriors won the non-region matchup.
John Highes added eight points and 10 rebounds.
Wade Hampton 95, Beaufort 57
Wade Hampton scored 53 points in the first half on its way to the win over the Eagles on Saturday.
Girls Basketball
John Paul II 53, First Presbyterian 21
The Warriors got contributions from almost everyone in their win over First Presbyterian.
Tkai DeVore led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bella Termini had six points. Three assists and four rebounds. Jasmine Hamilton added eight points, two assists and three rebounds.
May River 44, Bluffton 29
Jordan Bigham scored 10 points as May River earned a season split with Bluffton on Saturday.
It was just Bluffton’s second loss of the season. The Bobcats defeated the Sharks, 46-17, last month.
Tatyana Aiken led Bluffton with 13 points.
Wade Hampton 61, Beaufort 54
Layla Warren had 22 points and Sequoia Smalls 14 in the loss for Beaufort.
Wrestling
Beaufort, May River have strong showing at Trapp Duals
Beaufort and May River’s wrestling teams went 6-1 over the weekend at the Trapp Duals at Battery Creek.
May River finished second, losing to Eastside in the championship. The Sharks defeated Rock Hill, Stratford, Hartsville, Bluffton, and Whale Branch.
The Eagles’ lone loss came Friday also to Eastside. On Saturday, Beaufort went 5-0 win wins over Goose Creek, Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Hartsville, Timberland and St. James.
James Dagin (160) went 6-0, and Michael Cenci (170) and Jeremiah Simmons (182) each went 7-0 for Beaufort.
