Lowcountry roundup: Beaufort, John Paul II and HHCA pick up basketball wins

Boys Basketball
John Paul II 63, Northside Christian 46
The Warriors wrapped rnon-egion play with a win over Northside Christian.
Reco Anderson led JPII with 24 points and three steals. Malone Kinard-Huisinger had 14 points and eight rebounds while Austin McIntosh added eight points and six rebounds.
The Warriors (4-2) begin region play Jan. 3 at home vs Colleton Prep at 7:30 p.m.
West Ashley 74, Beaufort 37
West Ashley made 10 3-pointers in the win over the Eagles.
Rush Riley led Beaufort with 14 points.
Bluffton 43, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 40 (Saturday)
The Bobcats built a 31-17 halftime lead and held on for the win over the Jaguars.
Eric Eastham and senior Tyler Rice each had 13 points to lead Bluffton.
Mauriq Singleton had 12 points. Senior Shaleaf Cherry added 10 points to lead R-H.
Girls
West Ashley 43, Beaufort 39
Layla Warren had a team-high 25 points in Beaufort’s loss at West Ashley.
Sequoia Smalls added seven points.
John Paul II 51, Patrick Henry 35
John Paul II got off to a very slow start, but were able to pull out the win against Patrick Henry.
Tkai DeVore had a big night with 27 points, 14 rebounds, eight steals, three assists and three blocks. Katie Leigh Floyd added seven points, four assists and three steals.
Abby Quinty had seven points and two assists. Caroline Gilmour had four points and seven rebounds.
Hilton Head Christian 48, Bulloch (Ga.) 34
The Eagles improved to 8-0 on the season with the win.
Jasmine Campbell led HHCA with 14 points. Dior Shelton added 10 points and Brielle McCarthy scored nine.
Bluffton 55, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 31
Tacoya Heyward, Tatayna Aiken and Samurai Mitchell each scored 13 points in Bluffton’s win.
Mitchell also had 10 rebounds. Aiken had four blocks and five steals and Heyward had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Football
Lowcountry players shine in Touchstone Energy Bowl
Lowcountry players had strong performances in helping the South team to a 35-13 win on Saturday at the Touchstone Energy Bowl in Myrtle Beach.
May River’s Terry Fields returned an interception for a touchdown, had two tackles and averaged 31 yards a punt.
Bluffton’s Hakim White caught two passes, one for a TD and Bobcats’ Evan Hayes was 5-for-5 on extra points.
Beaufort’s James Dagin caught a pass and also rushed for three yards. Battery Creek’s Brandon Wilson had three tackles.
Wrestling
John Paul II competes in Hammond tournament
The John Paul II wrestling team competed in the Hammond Holiday tournament on Saturday. The Warriors went 1-4 but standout performers in the tournament included Steven Schidrich 4-1, Jonathan Field 3-0, Noah Brock 3-2, Luke Burton 4-1, and Kohl Woodham 3-2.
May River places third at Cane Bay Invitational
May River wrestling finished third this weekend at the Cane Bay Invitational.
The Sharks defeated James Island 66-11, Stratford 63-18, Chester, 46-28 in pool play. In championship round, May River lost to Fort Dorchester, 45-21 before beating Wando, 43-33 in the third-place match.
