High school sports, Sept. 21: Rebels extend volleyball streak to 10
Madison Cooler amassed 17 kills, six service aces and three blocks in leading Thomas Heyward to its 15th volleyball victory in 16 matches this season, sweeping Hilton Head Prep in three sets on Tuesday.
Jamie Davis contributed 15 assists for the Rebels, who allowed just 17 points to Prep over the entire match.
THA also got five kills from Ivy Bryan and four aces from Janna Christian in extending its winning streak to 10 matches.
Beaufort Academy 3, John Paul II 1: The Eagles overcame an eight-kill, 30-dig performance by JP2’s Marissa Majorkiewicz to win the final two sets of a tightly contested match.
Three of the four sets were decided by 25-21 scores, including the final two. The Golden Warriors also got four kills apiece from Abigail Barker and Jasmine Hamilton, while Darby O’Donnell contributed 21 assists.
Hilton Head Christian swept twice: The Eagles saw a five-match winning streak snapped when they suffered 2-0 defeats to both Calvary Day School and St. Vincent’s during a three-way encounter in Savannah.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Christian 7, Beaufort Academy 2: Molly Lucci, Michelle Bundy and Jacqueline Lowrey were straight-sets singles winners as HHCA cruised to victory.
HHCA’s Alison Foster also won her singles match in a third-set tiebreaker over Beaufort Academy’s Abby Dalton, and the Eagles also swept all three doubles matches. Julianna Lane and Louise Gallant were BA’s singles winners.
Hilton Head Prep 9, John Paul II 0: Riley Kuehler and Charlotte Rhulin swept to 6-0, 6-0 singles wins and Alexis Voulgaropolis and Molly Rankin dropped just one game apiece as the Dolphins dominated their encounter.
Prep’s Cori Leonard and Lauren Harvey had the toughest paths, with Leonard taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over JP2’s Jayne Trumps and Harvey prevailing 6-3, 6-3 over Margaret Bacevich.
