High school sports, Sept. 14: Seahawks get 1st poll votes; Bluffton still No. 2

Following three lopsided victories to start the season, Hilton Head Island is picking up some recognition in the polls.

Not enough to crack the top 10 in the newest Class 4A rankings of the S.C. Prep Media Football Poll, but the Seahawks are listed among seven schools in the “also receiving votes” category.

The Seahawks ran their record to 3-0 with last week’s 53-0 romp over May River, highlighted by four scoring plays of at least 60 yards. They had into this week’s Bridge Bowl against Bluffton having outscored opponents by a combined 141-11.

Bluffton (4-0) held onto its No. 2 position in the Class 3A rankings behind Dillon, which now has won 39 of its past 40 games. The Bobcats are coming off a 54-0 pasting of New Hampstead last week.

No other area teams received votes in this week’s balloting.

VOLLEYBALL

Hilton Head Christian 3, Hilton Head Prep 0: Sydney DeSimone put away nine kills and Lauryn Qualls added eight to propel the Eagles’ sweep of Prep.

DeSimone also led HHCA with 26 digs, while Qualls added 17 digs and five of the Eagles’ nine service aces. Brielle McCarthy tallied 22 assists on the evening.

Beaufort Academy 3, Colleton Prep 1: The Eagles pulled away to victory after splitting the first two sets, winning the third 25-18 before taking a 25-13 clincher.
