Dylan Frittelli hit one of the best shots ever at the RBC Heritage. He was penalized for it
Dylan Frittelli made a daring play at the RBC Heritage on Sunday. Then he was penalized for it.
Early on Sunday, the final day of the tournament, Frittelli was mid-play when he seemingly gaped at where his ball had landed. His ball wasn’t on the ground where he would expect to find it. Instead, it was hanging, mid-air, above his head caught in Hilton Head Island’s iconic Spanish moss.
Frittelli had the option to call it an unplayable ball.
He chose to play the shot.
The pro golfer grabbed his driver and positioned himself just under the suspended ball. With his club upside down and raised above his head, he knocked his ball back onto the fairway. Following the completion of the hole, Frittelli thought he’d made a legendary par.
“I thought this would be the greatest par of my life,” Frittelli tweeted following the incident.
However, a par was not in the cards for Frittelli regarding his memorable shot on the sixth hole.
He was assigned a two-stroke penalty for his play.
“I was assessed a two-stroke penalty for ‘standing astride’ my intended line of play during this shot. The rules of golf remain undefeated,” Frittelli continued in his post-shot tweet.
The PGA announced that Frittelli was penalized according to Rule 10.1c: Making Stroke While Standing Across or on Line of Play.
According to The United States Golf Association, Rule 10.1c states:
“The player must not make a stroke from a stance with a foot deliberately placed on each side of, or with either foot deliberately touching, the line of play or an extension of that line behind the ball. For this rule only, the line of play does not include a reasonable distance on either side.”
Following this ruling on the pro golfer’s unforgettable shot, the final result of the play was no longer a par, but instead a double bogey.
Meaning, this added two strokes to his play making him two strokes over par.
Frittelli ended his week at the RBC Heritage in 66th place.
