Former Hilton Head Prep standout Anita Uwadia and IJGA alumna Kelly Whaley saw their stays at the U.S. Women’s Amateur come to an end Wednesday, both eliminated in the opening round of match play at Springfield, Pa.
Uwadia struggled in a 6 & 4 defeat to Nebraska golfer Danielle Lemek, carding two double bogeys and a bogey in her first five holes at Rolling Green Golf Club. The incoming South Carolina freshman trailed 5-down at the turn and never got any closer.
Whaley, whose mother Suzy in 2003 became the first female since World War II to qualify for a PGA Tour event, was blitzed by Californian Andrea Lee in a 5 & 4 loss. Lee birdied four of her last six holes to take firm control.
