Son of Champions Tour pro leads Oldfield’s U.S. Amateur qualifier
Taylor Funk, son of Champions Tour pro Fred Funk, fired a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead over Bluffton’s J.D. Lehman after the opening round of a U.S. Amateur qualifier at Oldfield Golf Club.
Former USC Beafort player Brad Curren was another stroke back with a 69, as the field was cut to 32 players for Thursday’s final round. The top three players after 36 holes will punch their ticket to next month’s event at Oakland Hills Country Club outside Detroit.
Bluffton’s J.D. Hoft and Chandler Vilcheck also were within striking distance of a berth after opening 73s, with Cat Island’s Benji Gecy and Hilton Head Island’s Nicholas Russell another stroke behind.
