Wounded Heroes golf event tops $240,000 from annual golf day

The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes raised a record $240,000 from its annual golf classic last May at Hampton Hall and Belfair Golf Club, bringing the six-year total to $740,000 in donations to for Birdies for the Brave homefront groups.

This marked the first year that two venues were needed for the annual event, which also included a fishing tournament in April and a golf clinic for veterans hosted by Champions Tour veteran Bob Duval, father of former British Open champion David Duval.

K9s for Warriors, a nonprofit started by Bob and Shari Duval which trains dogs rescued from shelters to become service canines for veterans, is one of six organizations earmarked for Lowcountry Foundation donations.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Birdies for the Brave to give back to these courageous veterans, and appreciate the passion generosity and compassion of so many caring people in the Lowcountry community,” said Bluffton’s Russ Spicer, who founded the event in 2011.

Proceeds also will be given to the Military Warriors Support Foundation, Operation Homefront, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Green Beret Foundation and the Navy SEAL Foundation.
