Blistering 62 helps D.J. Trahan end U.S. Open absence
Former Hilton Head Island standout D.J. Trahan booked his first U.S. Open berth in seven years with a flourish Monday, ending his day with a 9-under-par 62 to share medalist honors from a sectional qualifier outside Memphis, Tenn.
Trahan’s 62 followed an opening 69 in Monday’s 36-hole test at Germantown (Tenn.) Country Club, vaulting to the top of the leaderboard at 11-under alongside fellow PGA Tour pro Andres Gonzales. It also marked his lowest competitive round since the 2011 Travelers Championship.
The U.S. Open will be played next week at famed Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh. It will be Trahan’s first Open appearance since 2009, when he missed the cut at soggy Bethpage Black.
Bluffton’s Bryson Nimmer was within striking distance of a possible Open berth when Tropical Storm Colin forced suspension of play at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Nimmer, who stood at 2-under with 13 holes remaining, will complete his round Tuesday morning.
