College golf: Charleston in front at Colleton River Collegiate
Three College of Charleston golfers shot 2-over par over Monday's first 36 holes of the Colleton River Collegiate, staking the Cougars to a nine-shot lead over Connecticut heading to the final round on the Dye Course at Colleton River.
Charleston's Parker Derby held the first-round lead with a 2-under-par 70, falling back in the afternoon with a 76. William Rainey and Philip Oweida added matching rounds of 75-71 for the Cougars.
Thomas Perrot of Memphis used a second-round 70 to take a two-shot lead in the individual competition, completing two rounds in 1-under 143.
USCB's Knoetsch leads in Georgia: Franzi Knoetsch fired a 2-over-par 73 Monday to grab a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Callaway Women's Collegiate at Callaway Gardens in Georgia.
On a day when birdies were extremely tough to come by, Knoetsch carded two in her first six holes before holding steady the rest of the way. The Sand Sharks finished Monday third in the team standings, 23 shots behind front-running Rhodes College.
Coastal Georgia coasting at Sand Shark: The Mariners put themselves in line for a third consecutive Sand Shark Classic crown when they opened up a 17-shot advantage after two rounds at Oldfield Golf Club.
Coastal Georgia combined for a second-round score of 8-under-par 280, turning a two-shot lead into a runaway. Among individuals, Dillon Board used a 6-under-par 66 to take the lead over Mariners teammate Trevor Smith and Faulkner’s Stone Cowie.
USCB stood fifth in the team standings, topped by Brad Curren at 4-over 148.
Wittenberg leads TaylorMade-adidas: The Tigers jumped out to a seven-shot lead after one round of the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate, remaining in front as the second round was suspended by darkness at Dataw Island's Cotton Dike course.
The Tigers still led by five over Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford when the final group opted not to play the 18th hole. Guilford's Ty Palmer held a two-shot lead in the individual competition, though he was one of those still to play No. 18.
Women forge tie at Dataw Island: Wittenberg and Bridgewater shared the top spot after the first two rounds of the TaylorMade-adidas women's event on Dataw Island's Morgan River course, a full 22 shots of anyone else in the field.
The schools also combined to hold down the top five spots in the individual competition, with Wittenberg's Macy Hubbard shooting 1-over-par 73 for a one-shot edge over teammate Jane Hopkinson-Wood and Bridgewater's Christina Herbert.
Mount Olive leads Hilton Head Lakes: Paula Guridi fired a 4-under-par 68 as the Trojans rewrote a school scoring record on the way to a three-shot edge over Armstrong State.
Mount Olive shot 297 as a team, the first time they had broken 300 in school history. Guridi's 68 gave her a four-shot lead in the individual competition.
