Golf notes: HHH's Wipper goes unbeaten at North-South matches
Hilton Head High's Meredith Wipper won all three of her matches at the North-South Girls' Golf showcase earlier this month, though it wasn't enough to keep the North from claiming a 9-7 victory in the Ryder Cup-style event at Chapin's Timberlake Country Club.
Wipper made a formidable pairing with Kelli Smith (St. James) in the team matches, producing South victories in both modified alternate-shot and best-ball formats. Wipper then scored the weekend's biggest romp in singles, taking a 4 and 3 triumph over Anna Chanthaphaeng of Boiling Springs.
Taylor Mayers (Fort Dorchester) was the only other South player to go 3-0 for the weekend. The North squad also had two unbeatens -- Class 3-A individual champion Victoria Huskey (Travelers Rest) and Savannah Goodman (Easley).
Wipper, who placed sixth at the 3-A finals, recently signed to play collegiately at the University of Findlay in Ohio.
GRIZ, KIEFER NOTCH WINS AT HJGT
Jonathan Griz (Hilton Head Island) shot a pair of 4-over-par 74s to win the Boys 13-14 division at last weekend's Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event at Palmetto Dunes.
Griz finished five shots ahead of his nearest competition at Palmetto Dunes' Fazio course, notching his fourth victory in the division since the start of October. His other wins came in a four-week span, including the Lowcountry Junior Shootout at Dolphin Head.
JPGA student Hanna Kiefer captured the girls' division, using a pair of 75s to overtake the IJGA's Melany Chong for a two-shot win. The boys' upper division went to Mexico's Jose Aguilar, who outdueled Quincy Stith (Wichita, Kan.) for a one-shot win.
COLLETON RIVER DUO TAKES HHIPGA HONORS
Matt Lucchesi, director of golf at Colleton River Plantation, and assistant pro Mark Reilly came away with two of the Hilton Head Island PGA's top awards at the chapter's year-end celebration this month.
Colleton River staged its first U.S. Golf Association championship this summer, playing host to the U.S. Junior Amateur in August. Hilton Head Island's Andrew Orischak nearly gave it a local winner, finishing runner-up in extra holes of the final.
Lucchesi was selected as the HHIPGA's Golf Professional of the Year, while Reilly was honored as top assistant professional.
Bill Sampson, director of golf at Old Tabby Links on Spring Island, claimed the night's third award as the chapter's Teacher of the Year.
