Hilton Head Island has been named North America's Golf Destination of the Year by the globe's top golf tour operators, bestowing the award at the conclusion of its annual convention this week in Tenerife, Spain.
The International Association of Golf Tour Operators lauded Hilton Head not only for its collection of courses by such renowned designers as Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, George Fazio and Robert Trent Jones Sr., but for the quality of the area's other amenities.
"Golf is part of the DNA of our destination," said Bill Miles, CEO of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.
"What sets Hilton Head Island apart is not only our long-standing tradition of golf, but the unique environment in which we play the game -- an Atlantic island that's home to 24 courses, miles of white sandy beaches, a commitment to the environment and preserving the natural beauty of our destination."
Brad Marra, vice president of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, was on hand to accept the award.
IAGTO is comprised of some 600 golf tour operators from more than 60 countries who vote for the awards. Each operator is asked to nominate the best-performing golf destinations covering all aspects of the game, resulting in Destination of the Year winners from each of five regions.
