Champions crowned at Junior Heritage, May River boys soccer to begin season at No. 1
Natashia Kiel and Jackson Van Paris rallied to win championships of the Sea Pines Junior Heritage on Sunday.
Kiel rallied from a 3-shot deficit beginning the final round to win the girls tile. The Pennsylvania native shot a 74 in the opening round was three shots behind Hilton Head Island’s Savannah Hylton.
Hylton led going into the final but carded a triple bogey on the 18th hole, giving the win to Kiel who shot a 75 Sunday and waited in the clubhouse after finishing her round.
Lowcountry golfers Sophia Burnett and Hvoioon Jang each finished second at 150, one shot behind Kiel. Hylton tied for fourth, two shots back at 152.
Van Paris began Sunday’s second round two shots back of Luke Sample, who shot an opening-round 69. Van Paris took a one-shot lead going into the final hole but but three-putted No. 18. Sample parred the final hole to force a playoff.
But the Pinehurst, NC native won on the first playoff hole for the title.
Beaufort’s Jerry Bruns finished in a three-way tie for third at 151. Bruns also had a hole-in-one on No. 7 in the final round.
Boys Basketball
Battery Creek 70, Beaufort 67
Daviyone Sanders led four Battery Creek players in double figures with 14 points as the Dolphins edged the Eagles on Saturday.
Obie Wilson and Amoni Waring each had 13 for BC, and David Grober had 11.
Rush Riley led Beaufort with 18 points. Oliver Holmes had 17, and Ben VanHise had 10 points.
Gray Collegiate 85, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 56
Tauris Watson scored a game-high 29 points as the War Eagles, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A, defeated the Jaguars.
Mauriq Singleton led R-H with 13 and Shaleaf Cherry had 10.
Girls Basketball
Beaufort 39, Battery Creek 36
Layla Warren scored a game-high 23 points to lead Beaufort over Battery Creek on Saturday.
Starr Reed and Trezure Siplin each had nine to lead Battery Creek.
Soccer
May River boys ranked No. 1
Coming off its first state title in program history, May River boys begin the season at No. 1 in Class 3A as SC Soccer Coaches released their preseason polls over the weekend.
The Sharks went 20-3-1 last year and defeated Bishop England, 6-2, in the state title match.
Bluffton boys were ranked No. 6 in Class 4A. On the girls side, Hilton Head Island was No. 5 in 4A and May River No. 3 in 3A.
USC Beaufort Athletics
Baseball opens season with shutout
USC Beaufort opened up its 2020 campaign with a 6-0 win over Mid-American Christian on Saturday.
Six pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout. Harmon Bell picked up the win.
Leandry Castro had three hits. Keith Olmo and Nick Milhan each added two hits.
The Sand Sharks host Point in a three-game series beginning Friday.
Softball team earns sweep
USC Beaufort’s softball team began the season with a 5-2, 6-0, win over Montreat on Sunday.
Emily Martin had four hits and four RBI in the two games to lead the 20th-ranked Sand Sharks.
Jodi Hatcher had four hits and an RBI and Kaleigh Furbush drove in two runs.
Maria Molloseau pitched five shutout innings to win the opener. Sloan Ducey pitched four scoreless innings to win game two.
USCB hosts Columbia International on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
