Karen Ferree seeks 4th Match Play title this week at Oldfield

Hilton Head Island’s Karen Ferree is among the challengers seeking to dethrone Simpsonville’s Lea Venable when the Women’s South Carolina Match Play Championship tees off Wednesday at Okatie’s Oldfield Club.

Ferree will begin her quest for a fourth WSCGA Match Play title with a quarterfinal encounter against Simpsonville’s Betty Jean Armbruster, with the winner advancing to face Venable in the semifinals. Armbruster captured the WSCGA Senior Championship in May.

Venable, who has a first-round bye, qualified for match play at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur earlier this month, where she lost her opening-round match on the 18th hole. Greenville’s Dawn Woodard, the 2015 WSCGA Player of the Year, tops the other side of the bracket.

Semifinals will be played Thursday, with the final to take place Friday morning. Champions also will be determined in seven lower divisions.
