USCB track & field wins 6 events, sets 5 school records

USCB track and field athletes won six events, set five school records, and posted one national qualifying mark at the Tiger Twilight Wednesday at Savannah State University, according to a school news release.

Senior Brandon Gourdine led the Sand Sharks, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.71 seconds — topping his school record and hitting the “A” qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships, to be held in May. Gourdine also broke his own school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.73 seconds, the release said.

Sophomores Betsy Douglas and Taylor Superior also broke their own school records while winning records. Douglas won the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:02.23 and Superior won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.60, coming within nine-tenths of a second of the “B” qualifying mark, the release said.

Quinton Ferguson improved on his school record in the pole vault with a vault of 4.14 meters, finishing third.

Also winning events for the Sand Sharks were Nathan Wagner in the javelin (44.89 meters), Chase Rhodus in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:00.25) and David Zerafat in the 5,000 meters (19:15.94).

The Sand Sharks are back in action April 8 and 9 at the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Ky., their final event before the Sun Conference Championships, the release said.
