2 Sand Sharks selected for Sun Conference weekly honors

USCB pitcher Julio De Pena, who tied a school record with 12 strikeouts Saturday, and high jumper Becky Hayden have been named Sun Conference players of the week in their respective sports.

De Pena, a right-hander from Puerto Rico, matched Michael Heesch’s school record with his 12-strikeout performance in a 6-3 victory over Ave Maria that completed a road sweep. The junior came within one out of a complete game, scattering seven hits.

He is the second Sand Sharks pitcher in as many weeks to be honored by the conference, following lefty John Gora a week ago. The duo has propelled USCB to a 1.40 team earned-run average, which ranks No. 2 among NAIA teams.

Hayden, a senior, scored her first career victory in the high jump last weekend, clearing 1.52 meters during the Tiger Relays at Savannah State. That mark currently stands as the best in the Sun Conference this season.
