USCB’s soccer season ends with loss in Sun Conference semifinals

Keiser’s Filippa Millqvist broke a deadlock with two goals late in the first half, ending USC Beaufort’s soccer season Tuesday with a 3-1 decision in the semifinals of the Sun Conference tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Millqvist put the Seahawks, ranked No.3 nationally, ahead for good when she slipped a shot past USCB goalkeeper Moa Johansson and inside the left post for a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute. She added another in the 40th minute on a counterattack after Olivia White’s strong tackle stopped a Sand Sharks threat.

Brooke Newman scored USCB’s lone goal in the 27th minute, tying the match 1-1 when she drove home a lead pass from Anna Gignilliat.

“We were able to fight back after falling behind 1-0, and we continued to pressure and create chances after we were down 3-1,” USCB coach Ed Heberling said. “We have done that all year, and it shows the maturity and perseverance this group had this season.”

The Sand Sharks finished the season 10-8-2, setting a school record for wins and earning the program’s first postseason victory when they beat SCAD Savannah in the Sun Conference first round. They also set school records for goals scored in a season (40) and fewest allowed (34).
