Second-half outburst propels Sand Sharks to rout of Warner

Hanna Crist and Brittany Lorentz scored their first goals of the season as part of USC Beaufort’s six-goal second half Tuesday, rolling to a 6-0 women’s soccer victory over Warner.

Karen Pimentel’s penalty kick broke a scoreless deadlock three minutes into the second half, opening the floodgates as Taylor Superior, Cameron Croney-Clark and Sam Satterlee also scored. USCB’s six goals was its highest total since last season’s 6-1 win over Florida Memorial.

The flurry also gave the Sand Sharks 36 goals for the season, tying the school record set in 2012. USCB can break the mark in its regular-season finale Friday at Webber International.

“Thank you to the girls for coming out strong after the half and putting up our most goals of the season,” USCB coach Ed Heberling said. “We were able to wear down their team with our depth, and it paid off.”

Pimentel and Croney-Clark also recorded assists for the Sand Sharks, who held a 17-1 edge in shots on goal.

After a frustrating first half of unfinished opportunities, it was Pimentel’s penalty kick that opened the gates for USCB. Brooke Newman was pulled down in the penalty area, and Pimentel stepped up to slot the spot kick into the right corner.

Superior made the score 2-0 when she took the ball off a Warner defender and blasted a left-footed shot into the net. Crist struck four minutes later when she put away a Croney-Clark pass.

Croney-Clark, Lorentz and Satterlee all scored in the final eight minutes to turn the game into a rout.
