USCB’s late flurry comes up empty in draw with SCAD Savannah
Taylor Superior countered SCAD Savannah’s goal with one of her own two minutes later as USC Beaufort battled to a 1-1 draw Thursday in a key Sun Conference matchup.
Mikaela Heyboer had put SCAD Savannah ahead in the 55th minute when she headed a bouncing ball past USCB goalkeeper Moa Johansson, but the lead was short-lived when Superior finished off a Hayley Pina cross from the left flank.
Both teams had chances to end the match in extra time, only to see their attempts narrowly miss. A shot from SCAD’s Annie Sullivan rolled just wide near the end of the first extra period, and the Sand Sharks fired six shots at the Bees’ goal in the second.
USCB’s best opportunity came with less than five minutes remaining, when Superior ran onto a through ball from M.J. Orduna and fired. SCAD goalkeeper Ande Eich made a diving stop, and Superior misfired on the rebound.
“Unfortunately we weren’t able to put away some quality chances late in the match, but our intensity and determination tonight was noticeable and needed,” USCB coach Ed Heberling said. “If we can continue to play at that same level each game, we will continue to find success.”
The Sand Sharks remain in fifth in the league standings, one point behind Thomas and Southeastern. They have a chance to leapfrog Thomas when the teams meet Saturday at USCB.
