Georgetown cruises to 27-shot romp for Big East golf title
Georgetown pulled away to an easy victory in the Big East men’s golf championship Tuesday, claiming three spots among the top six individuals on the way to a 27-shot margin of victory at Callawassie Island.
Sam Madsen led the way for the Hoyas, using a 1-over-par 73 to finish second individually behind Seton Hall’s Lloyd Jefferson Go. Madsen finished at 3-under 213 for the week, with teammate Cole Berman one shot behind after a 71.
Harrison Rhoades rounded out the Georgetown trio with a share of fifth, another five shots back, as the Hoyas finished with a team score of even-par 864. Xavier was a distant second, as the Hoyas claimed their first conference title since 2010.
“They had to battle through a lot,” coach Tommy Hunter told a conference liaison. “We had the weather delay at the end of the second round, but they came out strong early today. I thought that’s where we won the tournament. We chipped and putted well and that’s what you need to do at Callawassie.”
Go used the strength of a course-record 65 in the second round to claim individual honors, finishing the tournament with a total of 6-under 210. The Phillipines native capped off the 65 with a final birdie in Tuesday morning’s restart, following with a closing 75.
“I love this course,” said Go, who placed third a year ago at Callawassie. “And my teammates gave me great support, as always.”
Former IJGA student Charlie Spencer White, now a DePaul freshman, finished with a share of 14th after a closing 76.
