Bluffton’s Bryson Nimmer helps propel Clemson to ACC golf crown
Bluffton’s Bryson Nimmer fired his second straight 1-under-par 71 Sunday, joining his father as an ACC champion as the Tigers claimed their first conference title in a dozen years with an 11-shot romp over Wake Forest at New London, N.C.
Nimmer finished three days at Old North State Club at 7-under 209, matching the Clemson freshman record in an ACC Tournament. The Hilton Head Christian grad shared low honors on the Tigers’ roster with Austin Langdale, part of a three-way tie for fourth behind individual winner Robin Sciot-Siegrist of Louisville.
Nimmer’s father, Tony, was a member of the school’s first ACC golf champions in 1982, putting them in the record book as the first father-son tandem to be part of ACC titles at Clemson. Sunday’s result also meant a Nimmer has recorded a top-10 performance in four consecutive ACC Tournament appearances, as Tony Nimmer had three straight sixth-place finishes from 1982-84.
Four Tigers in all placed among Sunday’s top 15, as Clemson recorded its lowest ACC Tournament score in relation to par since its last crown in 2004. A year ago, Clemson stood tied with Georgia Tech after regulation but lost on the second playoff hole.
“We were so close last year,” Tigers coach Larry Penley said. “The guys seemed very determined and very focused and did a heck of a job this week.”
