Softball: Beaufort grad Chelsea Welty is Peach Belt freshman of week

Francis Marion University catcher Chelsea Welty, a former Beaufort High standout, has been named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week for Feb. 15-21.

In eight games last week, Welty batted .407 with six runs scored, six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs. She also threw out three of four baserunners attempting to steal, and did not commit an error.

Welty had the game-winning RBIs in a win over Hillsdale College and in both games of a sweep of Newberry College. She was also on the receiving end of right-hander Samantha Wroblewski’s no-hitter on Sunday, a 5-0 win over Mercy College.

This season, Welty has hit safely in 11 of 12 games while helping lead the Patriots to an 8-4 record.
