How 3 South Carolina women’s basketball alums played in WNBA debuts
Three former South Carolina women’s basketball players made their debuts in the WNBA this past weekend.
Raven Johnson, Madina Okot and Ta’Niya Latson all saw the court for their respective teams in the opening weekend of the league’s 30th season.
Johnson was selected by the Indiana Fever with the No. 10 overall pick in the draft last month. Okot was taken at No. 13 overall by the Atlanta Dream. Latson was a second round pick (No. 20 overall) by the LA Sparks.
Here’s how the Gamecock performed in their debuts:
G Raven Johnson
Johnson played 12 minutes off the bench in the Fever’s season opener. Indiana lost to the Dallas Wings 107-104.
Johnson scored four points in the game. She was 1-for-1 from the field and added two free throws.
She also added two rebounds, two assists and a steal to her stat line. Johnson’s two assists were the most by any Fever player who came off the bench in the game.
C Madina Okot
Okot played 10 minutes off the bench in the Dream’s opener. Atlanta beat the Minnesota Lynx 91-90, thanks in part to a last-second shot from fellow former Gamecock Te-Hina Paopao.
Okot scored eight points in her debut and led the team in bench points. She was 3-for-6 from the field and added two free throws.
She also added four rebounds and a steal to her stat line.
G Ta’Niya Latson
Latson played five minutes off the bench in her debut with the Sparks. Los Angeles lost to Las Vegas 105-78 in the game.
Latson scored two points in the game. The Sparks had seven players come off the bench in the game and only three scored points. Latson was one of the latter three.
She made her lone field goal attempt and also recorded a rebound.
