South Carolina baseball to add Campbell assistant to coaching staff, reports say
South Carolina is set to hire a third assistant baseball coach, according to multiple reports.
Joey Holcomb — a two-year assistant and recruiting coordinator at Campbell — will join Mark Kingston’s USC staff. The move was first reported by SportsTalkSC’s Phil Kornblut.
Earlier this year, the NCAA approved legislation to convert the volunteer assistant role into a third full-time, on-field assistant. Teams can begin hiring for the role at the start of the new NCAA fiscal year in July, and it appears Holcomb will fill the position for USC.
An Alabama native, Holcomb has spent the bulk of his coaching career in North Carolina, starting with a seven-year stint at UNC Greensboro. Holcomb served a two-year stint with N.C. State, helping the team during its 2021 College World Series run. Holcomb has worked primarily with the offense in his coaching stops and guided the Camels to record-setting numbers in his two years in Buies Creek.
The Gamecocks saw the Campbell offense first-hand in the Columbia Regional, where the Camels served as a No. 2 seed.
Holcomb would be the second coaching hire for the Gamecocks this offseason, who also added Liberty’s Matt Williams as pitching coach after Justin Parker left for the same role at Mississippi State.
